Update On Works at the Institute

Stage 2 Works
The stage 2 contract is progressing well, with work in the Old Mining Exchange, Theatre and lane-ways taking place concurrently. The work is on track for completion of the Old Mining Exchange with the Theatre near the middle of the year.

During the Old Mining Exchange works, it was found that the previously covered south doorway was intact, and has now been renovated and kept. This door was closed off when Her Majesty's Theatre was built. it was also found that the half circle petal shaped glass lights each end of the light well were patterned.

Investigations are being made to re-instate these. There is also evidence of windows on the south end that have been covered with hessian and painted. These are being investigated.

When the Old Mining Exchange floor was lifted, some 1935 newspapers were found, including The West Australian, Melbourne Star, Creswick Advertiser and others and when the rear doorway was opened up, some 1935 magazines and diaries were found. All have been kept and put on to the relevant database.
